FACT: All dental implants are NOT the same.
The competition in the dental implant market is aggressive. In 2013, it is projected that dental implants will become a one billion dollar industry. When implant patents expire clone dental implant companies will try to duplicate the design on the patents. These clone implants are marketed to dentists with a greatly reduced cost when compared to the original implant. Almost always, the clone implants do not have ANY clinical research in animals or humans. The clone implant companies can get around the FDA. These fake implants do not have years of research or manufacturing expertise. Do you really want to risk putting an unproven medical device into your body? Cheap dental implants are a big risk.
FACT: Implant manufacturers can introduce new designs into the market with false claims.
The dental implant market is lucrative and companies all want a piece of the action. Therefore, some implant manufacturers will copy/steal a design feature of a competitor’s implant. The manufacturer will claim that results are as good for their newly designed implant as compared to the original implant design. In theory, this makes sense. However, a dental implants proven success is usually a combination of design features as well as impeccable manufacturing quality control. The major brand name dental implants have years of research and development invested in implant design and manufacturing. In short, know what dental implant you are receiving and cheap dental implants are often that…cheap.
FACT: Clone Implant Companies consistently go bankrupt and out of business.
Dental implants are made out of titanium. Titanium is a metal and all metals can fatigue. A lot of clone implant manufacturers that have copied other implant systems do not have extensive clinical research. Thus, doctors (looking for lower overhead cost) and patients (looking for cheap implants) are taking a huge risk by using clone implants. Frequently, the smaller clone implant companies will go bankrupt. The parts for the clone implants are no longer available and replacement parts are very difficult to impossible to locate. This situation can leave the patient stranded and out of luck. Then the clone implant will have to be removed from the bone and a new brand name implant placed.
