What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are the most advanced way to restore missing teeth. A dental implant is composed of three parts: Implant, Abutment and Crown. The implant is made out of titanium and is inserted into to the jaw bone. The abutment screws into the implant and serves as a base for the cosmetic porcelain crown. Dental implants are so successful because they mimic mother nature. Dental implants are designed from the root up.
Old fashioned way to replace missing (bridges, dentures) have had limited results and often fail. Dental implants are the longest lasting tooth restoration possible and have tremendous benefits over old fashioned dental treatment. Dental implants are far superior to bridges.
Dental Implants Offer A More Natural Approach.
A dental implant is a titanium cylinder that acts as the root structure for the restored dental implant. A dental implant is inserted into the upper or lower jaw bone. There the bone grow around and fuses to the dental implant locking the implant in place. The implant then is restored with the abutment and cosmetic porcelain crown. Dental implants look, feel and function just like natural teeth. The dental implants need the same oral care as natural teeth. This includes brushing, flossing and regular dental check-ups.
The History of Dental Implants
Dental Implants were accidentally discovered in Sweden by Dr. Per-Ingvar Brånemark in 1952. While working on tissue healing in rabbit femurs, Dr. Brånemark discovered that bone will fuse to titanium. It was discovered that titanium can be structurally integrated into living bone without soft tissue inflammation or rejection. Dr. Brånemark called this newly discovered process “osseointegration.”
Today the science, biology, and knowledge of osseointegration make dental implants the best way to replace missing teeth.
