What is a Dental Implant?
Basically a dental implant is a titanium cylinder that takes the place of a tooth root. It is placed in the jaw where there is a missing tooth. Then in a process called Osseointegration (bone fusing with titanium) has occurred, a new tooth or teeth can be fastened on the implant. The new implant tooth looks, feels and functions just like a natural tooth.
Multiple implants can be used to support a bridge. When multiple teeth are missing dental implants can be utilized to create a dental implant bridge. This is advantageous for the patient because 1) No natural teeth are damaged 2) The implant teeth do not come out 3) the implants preserve the jaw bone levels 4) Is lower in cost that replacing each missing tooth with an implant.
Old-fashioned dentures only float on the gum tissue. They require lots of messy denture adhesive to keep them from moving. Still the old-fashioned dentures are mobile and can come out during speech, eating or laughter. This is socially devastating if your teeth fall out in front of people.
Dental implant dentures are exceedingly stable because the dentures “snap” onto the implants. The implants provide an anchor point for the dentures. You will not need to use denture adhesives with implant dentures. Also, you implant dentures are secure and will not fall out. Because the implant dentures are secure you can eat the foods you love. Lastly, the implants stimulate and preserves the jaw bone. If you are currently in full old-fashioned dentures, Dr. Nugent can convert them to implant dentures.
